UNBOXED Ambassadors Visit Edinburgh

Members of the UNBOXED Ambassadors Programme Spent a Weekend in Edinburgh during the annual festivals period

Publication date

UNBOXED has selected eleven emerging creative practitioners, who have each contributed to the commissions, to be part of an in-depth Ambassador programme.

The aim is to support them on their chosen career path by providing them with training, development, networking opportunities and the chance to learn from each other as part of a collective.

Last weekend, we met eight of our Ambassadors for a packed weekend in Edinburgh specifically designed for them, where they get the opportunity to get to know each other, soak up lots of culture including one of UNBOXED’s commissions – Dreamachine.

The Edinburgh International Culture Summit

The weekend’s activities began with a breakfast event hosted by UNBOXED for the Edinburgh International Cultural Summit, which had the theme, Culture and a Sustainable Fututre. Two of our young ambassadors, Lucy Wheeler (a Creative Technologist and Lead Developer on StoryTrails) and Rha Hira Arayal (a member of GALWAD’s Young Company who has written one of the monologues for the TV drama script) delivered talks sharing their experience of UNBOXED to the other attendees who included international delegates attending the summit, a mixture of Ministers, government officials, cultural representatives, and youth delegates.

Culture and a Sustainable Future

Our next stop for the culture summit was Scottish Parliament, where our ambassadors attended a session on Culture and Education, with talks on the importance of encouraging creativity in young people from Ofelia Omoyele Balogun, Rosemary Nalden, Deirdre Quarnstrom and Andreas Schleicher.

Dreamachine

Dreamachine; currently in residency at Murrayfield Ice Rink until 25 September, is an immersive experience designed to unlock the extraordinary potential of one’s mind. Conjured entirely by light and music, the colourful world of the Dreamachine will unfold behind your closed eyes – created by your own brain and completely unique to you. Our ambassadors were encouraged to lie back, shut their eyes, and allow the light show to begin; experiencing their own internal kaleidoscope set to the celestial compositions of Jon Hopkins.

Developing a collective of creatives

This trip was a fantastic way to kick start the UNBOXED ambassadors programme and we can’t wait to see where it goes from here!
